Ask Well: Do Ball Chairs Offer Benefits?

From the New York Times / June 12, 2013

Ball chairs have historically been used as a way to activate core musculature and reduce low back pain. Ball chairs burn, on average, about 4 more calories per hour than sitting on regular chairs. However, a new study reveals that standing up periodically throughout the workday is more beneficial for people who experience low back pain than a ball chair and promotes better health in general. “Standing desks” are now becoming more common than ball chairs. The ideal amount of standing is about 15 minutes every hour.
